Volubilis was the Roman Empire’s southwestern corner, and enough of it survives — a basilica, a triumphal arch, and mosaic floors left open to the sky in the houses they were made for — to make the scale of it legible.
Moulay Idriss, ten minutes away, is built across two hills around the tomb of the man who founded the first Moroccan dynasty. It was closed to non-Muslims until 1912 and to non-Muslim overnight guests until 2005; the shrine itself remains closed, but the town and its views are not.
We finish in Meknes at Bab Mansour, the gate of the sultan who made this his capital for fifty-five years, and at the vast granaries and stables he built to supply it.
