Présentation

Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and the least changed of Morocco’s imperial medinas. It is also genuinely disorienting, which is why a guide is less a luxury here than in any other Moroccan city.

Our guides are Fassi historians rather than shopping escorts. Over roughly five hours on foot you will see the Chouara tanneries from a terrace above the pits, the gates of the Al-Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 and still teaching — the Bou Inania madrasa, and the funduqs where caravans once unloaded.

We stop for lunch where the guides eat, not where the tour buses stop, and there is no obligatory carpet showroom on this itinerary.

We meet at Bab Boujloud, the blue gate, at 09:00. Guests staying outside the medina can add a hotel pickup at no cost when booking.

The guide is private to your party, so the cost is the same whether you are two or six. The price shown covers up to six people; a seventh person starts a second group and a second guide.

Yes, strongly — they still use pigeon droppings and lime. You are handed a sprig of mint at the terrace entrance, which helps more than you would expect.

    Worth the early start

    A long day but the guide paced it well and never rushed us. Being able to pay the balance on the day made booking from home much easier.

    Très bien organisé

    Organisation impeccable et guide passionnant. Le déjeuner n était pas inclus, ce qui est clairement indiqué, mais prévoyez des espèces.

    Exactly as described

    Booked three things through Atlas Nomad in a week and every pickup was on time. The driver on the Agafay trip went out of his way to find us a quieter spot for the sunset.
