The Ourika is the valley Marrakchis themselves escape to in summer, and the drive alone justifies the day — the plain gives way to red hills, then to terraced fields and walnut trees along a real river.
We stop at a Berber house where a family will show you how the kitchen, the bread oven and the roof terrace work, over mint tea. It is a genuine home rather than a staged visit, and there is no obligation to buy anything.
At Setti Fatma there is a walk up to the first of seven waterfalls. The path is rocky and crosses the river a few times on stepping stones; the first fall takes around thirty minutes at a steady pace, and your guide will judge how far the group wants to go. Lunch is at a riverside terrace with tables set out over the water.

A long day but the guide paced it well and never rushed us. Being able to pay the balance on the day made booking from home much easier.
